Norwegian Minister of Environment visits GRID-Arendal
Friday August 14 1998 - Guro Fjellanger, the Norwegian Minister of Environment, visited GRID-Arendal to review its progress.The Minister, accompanied by senior officials from her Ministry, held broad discussions with experts from GRID-Arendal, on the use of the Internet in State of the Environment reporting and the implementation of the Norwegian supported UNEPnet programme.

Ozone meeting makes proposals on controlling emissions
Geneva, 9 July 1998- Some 300 delegates from 97 countries attending the Open-ended Working Group on the Montreal Protocol here have concluded their deliberations on efforts to protect the Earth's ozone shield. Their proposals will now be forwarded to the Meeting of the Parties, which will take place in Cairo this November, for decisions and action.

Over the years and through many generations, a holistic traditional knowledge of their lands, natural resources and environment has evolved.

UNEP calls for urgent action on climate change
Nairobi/Geneva, 22 July 1998 - Following scientific reports that 1998 is shaping up to be the hottest year on record, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) urged policymakers today to take immediate action to limit emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

Synergetic Cooperation between WHO/EPI and UNEP IE in the Refrigeration Sector
Nairobi, June 1998- The World Health Organization's Expanded Programme for Immunization (WHO/EPI) and the United Nations Environment Programme, Industry and Environment (UNEP IE), through its OzonAction Programme, launched a partnership for training activities in the refrigeration sector. The agreement for such partnership was initiated at the 1998 Technet Consultation of WHO/EPI in Copenhagen, 16-20 March 1998.

POPs treaty talks reveal broad consensus on need for action
Montreal/Nairobi,3 July 1998- Officials from 92 countries conclude their first round of talks here today on how to minimize and eventually eliminate emissions and releases of persistent organic pollutants such as DDT and PCBs, after reaching early agreement on the way forward.

UNEP Executive Director Calls for Greater Public Access to Environmental Information
Aarhus/Nairobi, 26 June 1998- Addressing a meeting of environmental information experts here in Aarhus earlier this week, Mr. Klaus Toepfer, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), called on governments to implement practical measures to facilitate greater access by the public to environmental information.

WMO and UNEP issue summary of scientific assessment of the ozone layer 1998
Nairobi/Geneva, 22 June 1998- The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) have jointly released today the Executive Summary of the "Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion - 1998". It has been prepared by more than 200 scientists from around the world and was reviewed from 1 to 6 June by 77 scientists from 27 countries.

Treaty talks start on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)
Nairobi/Montreal, 22 June 1998- Over 100 governments are meeting in Montreal, Canada, from 29 June to 3 July, for the first round of talks on an international agreement to minimize emissions and releases of persistent organic pollutants such as DDT and PCBs into the environment.

Genetically modified organsisms
Geneva/Nairobi, 15 June 1998-The weekend before last, there was a general referendum in Switzerland on whether genetically modified organisms (GMOs) should be banned in the country, either in research or for general release. The referendum, if passed, would have prohibited the release of such GMOs in the form of corn, soya, sugar beet or the use of GMOs in the production of vaccines.

Guide to environment and development sources of information on CD-ROM and the Internet
Moscow/Nairobi, 5 June 1998- "The information gap regarding the quality and quantity of environmental data and information remains great between the developed and developing countries and countries with economies in transition", said Klaus Topfer, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), when officially launching the UNEP publication Guide to Environment and Development Sources of Information on CD-ROM and the Internet during World Environment Day celebrations hosted by the Russian Federation in Moscow.

Insurance executives discuss how to deal with consequences of climate change
Cologne/Nairobi, 9 June 1998- The insurance industry has suffered from a series of "billion dollar" storms since 1987. This has led to a strong increase in claims, reduced availability of insurance coverage and higher premiums. These are some of the reasons why over 100 insurance executives and representatives of other financial institutions from more than 15 countries will meet in Cologne, Germany, from 9-10 June 1998, to discuss strategies to deal with the problem, and in particular how to improve environmental reporting standards.

UNEP receives grant from Turner foundation
Nairobi, 22 May 1998- The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) today received a grant of $350,000 from the United Nations Foundation (a public charity established by Ted Turner, Co-Chairman of Time Warner Inc., to oversee the administration of his $1 billion gift to the United Nations). The grant will finance the production of a youth version of the Global Environment Outlook (GEO).
