During this period, the GEF Coordination Office was fully staffed and operational procedures were implemented to ensure the mainstreaming of GEF activities in the work of UNEP.

Geneva/Nairobi, 26 May 1997 - Government officials are meeting in Geneva this week for a third round of negotiations on a legally binding agreement that will make the world safer from hazardous chemicals and pesticides. The meeting is jointly organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

April 1997 - The UNEP International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC) launched a Searchable Information Directory on Environmentally Sound Technologies (ESTs) during the Fifth Session of the Commission for Sustainable Development (CSD), held from 7 to 25 April 1997 in New York. Information and data of this directory will be collected and disseminated through a newly developed PC software tool called "maESTro". Through its Directory Interchange Format (DIF), maESTro is fully compatible with UNEP's Global Resources Information Database (GRID), NASA, CEOS, NASDA and others.

April 1997 - Ecodesign: A Promising Approach to Sustainable Production and Consumption is the first manual to provide companies with a step-by- step approach to ecodesign. During product development, many opportunities exist to fully integrate environmental considerations into the design process. This can lead to: radical reductions in the numbers of parts and amounts of materials used; avoiding use of toxic materials; reducing energy consumption during use to a minimum; and planning for re-use, recycling or final disposal from the very earliest life-cycle stage. This process can even go further, with the product becoming a service when the manufacturer's responsibility is extended to take-back for re-use or disposal.
