GRID-Arendal celebrates the 20th year of its founding. Among the major events organized in connection with the celebration are: the high level seminar “Going for the Green New Deal” to be held on Friday, 21 August, 2009, which will address GRID-Arendal's contribution to UNEP’s Green Economy Initiative, and an international meeting of experts on the development of capacity for integrated ocean management, 

Climate in Peril: A Popular Guide to the Latest IPCC Reports was launched at the meeting of UNEP Governing Council in Nairobi. The report presents the findings of the IPCC’s Climate Change 2007 Synthesis Report in simplified language and structure. The guide, which is available in English, Norwegian and French editions, is a joint joint publication of GRID-Arendal and SMI Books, with the generous support of the Norwegian Pollution Control Authority and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

The report An Integrated Ecosystem Management Approach to Conserve Biodiversity was launched at the Arctic Council Ministerial meeting. The report highlights some of the main achievements of ECORA over the last 5 years. The project results represent the efforts of many people and organizations across Russia and the other Arctic nations.

GRID-Arendal prepared the graphics featured in the A rapid response assessment report entitled The Natural Fix? The Role of Ecosystems in Climate Mitigation,  released by UNEP to mark  World Environment Day 2009.  The report  indicates that boosting investments in conservation, restoration and management of natural ecosystems will not only become important, but will provide our best and most effective way to slow down climate change and accelerate sustainable development and the achievement of the poverty-related Millennium Development Goals.

Vial Forest Graphics, apublication of the UN Environment Programme, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and the UN Forum on Forests, was produced by GRID-Arendal.  The report  that serves as an advocacy tool to promote conservation and sustainable management of the world’s forests through a better understanding of the values they provide in support of global ecological stability, economic development and human well-being.

A marine edition of EarthWire was launchned. EarthWire Marine is an environment news service that brings the latest news on the marine environment to you daily. The service collects news from media sources on the Internet, press releases and news from research organisations, environmental organizations and the public sector.

The Uganda Atlas of Our Changing Environment, prepared by the National Environmental Management Authority of Uganda, provides extensive scientific evidence of Uganda’s changing environment. Modelled after Africa: Atlas of our Changing Environment previously published by UNEP, the Uganda Atlas seeks to safeguard the country’s environment and inspire decision makers to action.

A youth exchange programme, under a partnership agreement between GRID-Arendal and CENNS (Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe, EIS-Africa, National Environment Management Authority of Uganda, Network for Environment and Sustainable Development in Africa and the Southern African Research and Documentation Centre)  and with support from FK Norway and UNEP, commenced in March and will end in September.  Fifteen participants from Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Ivory Coast, Egypt and Norway are involved in the programme. The goals of the programme are: to raise awareness of environmental issues among African and Norwegian youth and to strengthen the Africa Youth Environment Network (AYEN); to build synergies between UNEP and its collaborating centres and African youth in the area of environmental assessment and reporting; and  to facilitate young people’s contribution to policy framework for sustainable development.
