Description

Marine and Coastal Protected Areas (MPAs) are seen as a useful tool for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and areas under MPAs are fast expanding. It is well known that quantity cannot be equated with quality and that many of the MPAs are in fact merely on paper. Lessons need to be learned from past failures. Future attempts must locate such efforts in socio-cultural and local institutional realities, draw on traditional and ecological knowledge systems and ensure effective participation of indigenous and local communities.

Are indigenous peoples and local communities part of the problem or part of the solution? Under what conditions can they be part of the solution? Join us for a discussion on these issues.

Organisers: International Collective in Support of Fishworkers (ICSF), World Forum of Fisher Peoples (WFFP), National Fishworkers' Forum (NFF) of India.

Time: 13.15-14.45.
