Production of crops for biofuels also competes with food production
(Banse et al., 2008). Indeed, the corn equivalent of the
energy used on a few minutes drive could feed a person for a
day, while a full tank of ethanol in a large 4-wheel drive suburban
utility vehicle could almost feed one person for a year. A
recent OECD-FAO (2007) report expected food prices to rise
by between 20% and 50% by 2016 partly as a result of biofuels.

Simulated projections for Polar cod distribution with global warming

Rising block tariffs aim to achieve several public policy goals. A low or zero tariff applied to the first block can enhance affordability. For example, Durban, South Africa, provides 25 litres of water a day free of charge - a lifeline to many - with a steep increase above this level. Value for the avoided CO2 emissions during a 25-year transition period from primary forest to oil palm or other land uses
For the focus areas Batang Toru and Tripa in the two main orangutan habitats (forest on non-peatlands and peat) it was calculated what the values (USD/ha) would be of the avoided CO2 emissions over a period of 25 years. For Batang Toru these ranged from 3,711-11,185 USD/ha and for Tripa from 7,420-22,094 USD/ha.

The area where orangutans occur can be separated into two main habitat types: forest on peat-lands (Tripa) and forests on mineral soils (Batang Toru), and the results are presented for these types separately.
