Status of inequitable access to land and natural resources, 2005 Status of inequitable access to land and natural resources, 2005
Strong access to land and natural resources have been found to be associated with increased economic growth among rural poor in developing countries. The study behind the data in the map examined the status on access to land and natural resources in selected countries, and created an index on the degree of concern. Strong rights to land empowers communities and families, and enables them to take charge over their future.

The greening of Niger - trends in vegetation The greening of Niger - trends in vegetation
The Sahel region of Africa, a belt of savanna ecoregion south of the Sahara desert, stretched from coast to coast. This region is not only known for long spells of drought (and desertification), but also from housing some of the World's poorest countries. Recent trends show good signs on the recovery of the region, and the relative vegetation index (NDVI) presented for the country of Niger in this map shows increases in the period from 1982 to 19...

Dissolved phosphate levels: concentrations at river mouths Dissolved phosphate levels: concentrations at river mouths
Phosphorus is naturally present in water, primarily as inorganic and organic phosphates. Phosphates can enter aquatic environments in several ways: from the natural weathering of minerals in the drainage basin, from biological decomposition, or as runoff from human activity in urban and agricultural areas. A comparison of the major watersheds between the two decades showed that northern Europe and North America had lower phosphate concentrations...

Cereal productivity in sub-Saharan Africa under a projected Intergovernamental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) scenario Cereal productivity in sub-Saharan Africa under a projected Intergovernamental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) scenario
A majority of the population in sub-Saharan African lives in rural areas, where income and employment depend almost entirely on rain-fed agriculture. This population is today at high risk. Sub-Saharan Africa already has a highly variable and unpredictable climate and is acutely vulnerable to floods and droughts. Total population: access to sanitation Total population: access to sanitation
The 2004 global image sadly shows that the lack of access to clean water remains a burden for the poorest countries, preventing them accelerating their development. Essentially handicapping most sub-Saharan African countries, the map shows some curious trends, such as Romania, which remains far behind all other European countries.
