One of GEO's tasks is to recommend measures and actions that could effectively reverse unwelcome trends and reduce threats to the environment. Specific conclusions and recommendations have been formulated throughout this report. In addition, on the basis of the GEO-2000 assessment, UNEP recommends that future action be focused on four key areas:
None of these areas is discrete - the actions required to address one area are likely to benefit other areas as well. And each of the areas is open-ended - the suggestions for action described below are only a sample of those that could be included under each heading. In some areas, a good start has already been made. However, UNEP believes that increased and concerted policy development and action in these four 'cross-cutting' areas would do much to break the stalemate which currently prevails on too many pressing environmental issues. The rationale for selecting these key areas is described in the text that follows; the boxes at the end of each of the four sections summarize suggestions for action that have arisen since GEO-1.
