Documentation (overview) The Baltic Sea drainage basin Agricultural data sets were derived from two principle sources: (i) the IDRISI Baltic Sea Land Cover image, more specifically, the Open Land class, and (ii) national official statistics on agricultural land for first order sub-national administrative regions. This was obtained for all countries except Belarus and the Baltic States for which only national statistics were obtained. Agricultural land was divided into two categories, Arable Lands and Pasture Lands. These data sets are provided separately. For those interested in total agricultural, the two images simply need to be added. The methods used to create the Arable Lands and Pasture Lands data sets consisted primarily of three steps. Note: all three steps were performed independently for Arable and Pasture Lands. First, for each statistical region, the total agricultural land within each region (either arable of pasture land) was divided by the Open Land area from the Land Cover image, for the same statistical region. This fractional value represents the probability of having agricultural land in a particular Open Land grid cell. Second, the fractional values generated from step one were assigned to the corresponding grid cells in the Open Land IDRISI image. Finally, to smooth the data, the final images (Arable and Pasture) were aggregated into 10 km x 10 km cell sizes. An added item called PERCENT is found in each coverage. This integer value represents the percent of arable land within a given polygon unit. Note: All 'no data' polygons are coded percent = 150. This was done to distinguish between 0 percent and 'no data' polygons. The IDRISI Arable and Pasture Land images were converted into ARC/INFO vector coverages, for PC ARC/INFO uses. Due to ARC/INFO limitations concerning number of arcs per polygon, the images were divided into four tiles. For those ARC/INFO users that are not affected by such limitations (i.e., ARC/INFO 7.0), then we suggest to convert the ARABLE.GIS and PASTURE.GIS 10 km resolution ERDAS 7.4 files into complete, continuous vector coverages. ************************************************************************ Contact information Hugo Ahlenius phone: +47-370-35650 UNEP/GRID-Arendal fax: +47-370-35050 e-mail: mapmaster@grida.no II.
