Sweitzer, J., Langaas, S., and Folke, C. 1995. Land Use and Population Density in the Baltic Sea Drainage Basin: A GIS database. Accepted by AMBIO. Documentation (overview) The Land and Ocean (coastline) coverage was generated simply to provide users a database layer that will enable them to extract additional information when used in conjunction with other database layers. The Land and Ocean coverage is a subset of the PONET Political and Oceans data layer produced by ESRI as one of the Digital Chart of the World (DCW) data layers. PONET is a 1:1,000,000 scale vector polygon ARC/INFO coverage. The Land and Ocean coverage was generated by reselecting on the item called Popytype from the DCW PONET data layer. Popytype value 1 is coded as land and values 2 - 5 are coded as ocean. The Ocean and Land vector coverage was converted into an IDRISI image file via DLG format. The IDRISI LND_OCN image file has a 500 meter cell size. Due to the fact that positional accuracy is lost when converting the ARC/INFO vector Land and Ocean coverage into a grid with a 500 meter cell size, it was also decided to provide an IDRISI vector line file of the coastline created from the ARC/INFO LND_OCN vector coverage. The file is called COAST.VEC. ************************************************************************ Please refer to the Technical Report, `A Baltic Sea Drainage Basin GIS Database for Environmental Description and Analysis', that is provided with the Baltic Sea Drainage Basin Project data for a complete and detailed explanation of database automation. ************************************************************************ Contact Person Sindre Langaas phone: +46-8-16 20 00 UNEP/GRID-Arendal fax: +46-8-15 84 17 c/o Dept. of Systems Ecology e-mail: landgaas@grida.no Stockholm University s-106 91 Stockholm, Sweden II.
