BALANS

A seemless land cover database for the Baltic Sea drainage basin has been developed within the BALANS project. The project has been running for three years, with an end in the summer of 2001, funded through the EU 4th framework programme. The project has been led by Metria Miljöanalys (formerly Satellus AB) with Finnish Environment Insitute, Novosat Oy, GRID-Arendal, GRID-Warsaw, and Swedish Meterological and Hydrological Institute as partners in the consortium.

The dataset has been assembled from IRS 1C/1D WiFS data with scenes from 1997 up to 2000 for the region and ancilliary GIS data. The data has been validated and quality controlled. Note that the product is not homogenous, the approach has been to produce the best possible product pixelwise within the time and cost limits of the project. This means that the quality of the reference data sets the standard for the quality of the BALANS land cover classification. Since the land cover reference datasets primarily are country-based, the quality fo the product is homogenous within a country. The pixel size is 150 x 150 metres.

BALANS Land cover

This is a generalised version of the BALANS land cover database with a pixel size of 150 x 150 metres. The generalised product has a minimum mapping unit of 10 hectares for the class Water bodies and 25 hectares for remaining classes, meaning that a single pixel can't have a different class than its neighbours. The second difference from the full BALANS dataset is that the two classes Coniferous forest and Deciduous forest have been merged into the class Forest, and similarly with the classes Agricultural land and Seminatural areas that have formed Open land. The class Bare rock has disappeared during the generalisation process.

BALANS Wetlands

Using the BALANS land cover dataset (see above), the amount of wetland area has been calculated as a percentage per 1.5 km area. For a 1500 x 1500 m (10 x 10 150 m pixels) box, the number of cells classified as wetlands were summarized, and divided by the total area. Cells in the actual Baltic Sea were not taken into account in the calculation, but all cells on land were included, except the classes No data, Clouds and Outside of Baltic Sea drainage basin.

The percentage has been calculated as an integer value (to reduce data size).

Hydro1k basin

Examination of the existing drainage basin delineation at "Baltic Sea region GIS, maps and statistical database" (digitized after a drainage basin definition done in 1986 read more) in comparison with the Hydro1k drainage basins came out in favor of the latter. Hydro1k is derived from the GTOPO30 elevation model, with 30 arc seconds resolution. Using the elevation model, the drainage basins has been calculated using slope and aspect, i.e. "if a drop of water is put here, where does it drain to?".

A study documenting this comparison was done as a Master's Thesis at the Royal institute of Technology, Stockholm. The report, by mr Roberto Miranda is available online from KTH. For use with the existing datasets in the "Baltic Sea region GIS, maps and statistical database" a subset of Hydro1k for the Baltic Sea drainage basin has been prepared. Minor editing has been done to the data, to adjust to the previous drainage basin definition, as well as using drainage basin data from MapBSR.
