This section of the Baltic
Sea Region GIS, Maps and Statistical Database is the most popular.
Here we offer ready-made (digital) maps that can be inserted into reports,
essays etc., or printed out on overhead transparencies, as intially intended.
This last purpose was also the reason why we separated the thematical colour
maps from the cartographical base maps in black & white. Each map is offered in four
common graphical formats: GIF (directly viewable), PDF, TIF and Adobe EPS.
Files of the two latter formats are ZIPped.

I. Colour Maps
These maps were created in the summer of 2000 as a new edition of the older maps that have been available here, displaying the same information. The older maps are still available (next section) of this page.
Baltic Sea Drainage Basin
This "basemap" displays the extent of the drainage basin (the boundary for the water that ends up in the Baltic Sea), and the countries in the region.
Land Cover
This map displays the land cover over the whole region.
Arable Lands
The Arable Lands map displays
percent arable land area clipped within the Baltic Sea drainage basin boundary.
Pasture Lands
The Pasture Lands map displays
percent pasture land area clipped within the Baltic Sea drainage basin boundary.
Wetlands
This maps shows the percentage of wetlands in within the Baltic Sea drainage basin.
Population Density
The Population Density map displays the distribution of the population within the Baltic Sea drainage basin.

basin is distinguished from the part that lies outside.

III. General Comments
PNG files

PNG files are high quality, but still small in size. They can be imported in most modern graphics editing programs, as well as web browsers.

All PNG files are 24 bit / true color
-
Images were created with level 6 (loss-less) compression
-
"Skip ancillary chunks" and "Interlacing" was not set
GIF files
-
All GIF files were saved with
the Version 87a - Noninterlaced option.
-
Images are each approx. 945 columns
x 695 rows x 256 colours.
-
GIF files can be easily imported
into most graphic utility software applications.
PDF files
-
All PDF files were converted from
the EPS files, or from PS files.
-
To directly view the files in
your browser, the free Adobe
AcroReader is required.

The sizes of the PDF files ranges
from 20 - 700KB. Be aware!
TIF files
-
All TIF files were saved with
the Uncompressed option.
-
TIF files were zipped using PKZIP
Version 2.04g.
-
Color maps (True color/24 bit) are approx
4.0 MB uncompressed.

Color maps (256 colors) are approx
3.0 MB uncompressed.

Black & white maps are approx.
376 KB uncompressed.

TIF files can be easily imported
into most graphic utility and word processing software applications.
EPS files

All EPS files were saved with
the Adobe Illustrator 3.0 option.

EPS files were zipped using PKZIP
Version 2.04g.

Compression ranged from 72 - 84
percent.

Files were saved in Landscape
position.

EPS files were successfully imported
into Adobe Illustrator 4.0 and Corel Draw 5.0.
Printing GIF, PDF, TIF and EPS
files
-
GIF and TIF files can be printed
from most graphic utility software applications.
-
GIF, TIF and EPS files were successfully
printed from Adobe Illustrator 4.0 and Corel Draw 5.0 both in black &
white and colour.
-
Files may need to be rotated before
printing based on default output printer orientation.
-
Problems may occur with the Adobe
.EPS files.
-
PDF files can be directly printed
from your web browser if Adobe AcroReader is installed
-
Printer/SW may not support font
types, two solutions when printing from Adobe are:

Convert all text to graphics (i.e.,
bitmap), or
-
Convert all text to printer supported
font type.
