All MapInfo data sets below have kindly been prepared by Mr. Mats Elfstrom, from the ArcInfo data sets found on this web site. The data sets are downloadable as compressed files in ZIP-format created using WinZip v7.0. Each ZIP-file contains data files along with a *.txt file with the extracted header from the MIF file. Regarding additional metadata, please refer to (1) the corresponding ArcInfo metadata files, and (2) the general MapInfo readme.txt file prepared by  Mr. Mats Elfstrom, located at the bottom of this page.

Administrative Units

The Administrative Units data consists of a zip-file that contains a MID/MIF file pair, along with a *.txt file with the extracted header from the MIF file.

readme.txt - MapInfo files.


The MapInfo files were converted with ArcLink v3.1.4, which is shipped with MapInfo Professional v4.5.2.

The ARC/INFO e00 files found under http://www.grida.no/baltic/htmls/arcinfo.htm were used as input data.

As MapInfo does not support the Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area projection other than in a polar aspect, a new co-ordinate system was created and added to the MAPINFOW.PRJ file. The parameters used for this are:

"Equal-Area Projection (GRID-A)", 9, 28, 7, 20, 60, 55, 65, 0, 0

(the above line can be pasted into the file, under the heading 'Regional Equal-Area Projections'). The variables are:

9 = projection, Albers Equal-Area Conic
28 = datum, European 1950 (ED50)
7 = units, meter
20 = origin long
60 = origin lat
55 = Standard parallel 1
65 = Standard parallel 2
0, 0 = false easting and northing, not used

These parameters gave the best results compared with the MapInfo standard world map. Thus, it is possible to view the Baltic GIS data along with other projected data sets. A "small" error (< 10 km) persists, notably in the far corners of the area.

All of the e00 files content was converted. Some unmappable datafiles, and the tic files were excluded from further processing. If needed, these files can be downloaded as datafile.zip and ticfile.zip, respectively; the e00 file names are retained.

For the rest of the data, further editing was undertaken.

  1. The tiling needed for ARC/INFO use is unnecessary in MapInfo, so the tiles were joined into single files.
  2. The columns AREA and PERIMETER are unnecessary in MapInfo,  since these parameters are properties of the spatial objects. These columns were removed in order to reduce data overhead and file size.
  3. Certain no data areas were deleted, where these could be easily discerned.
  4. The first ID column of each table was updated with its current RowID,  in order to give each object a unique ID. The duplicate ID column was removed.
  5. The joined and edited MapInfo tables were exported to MIF/MID files using the standard MapInfo tools.
The MIF/MID files were compressed using WinZip v7.0 SR-1

Each zip-file contains a MID/MIF file pair, along with a *.txt file with the extracted header from the MIF file. The MID/MIF file can be imported into a MapInfo table using the MapInfo import command.
