Background

Introduction

Home to some of the most spectacular sceneries and ecosystems in the world, Africa is a region of great diversity. It is also a region which is experiencing major changes in land-use, population growth and urbanization. Combined, these factors are placing an increasing pressure on the region’s ecosystems, biodiversity and natural resources. One way to meet these challenges is by improving environmental knowledge and strengthening information sharing amongst all groups of society.

GRID-Arendal’s activities in Africa aim to address weak systems for environmental data management, and inadequate capacity for the uptake of environmental assessments into decision- and policy-making. The activities of GRID-Arendal in the African region strive to strengthen environmental information networking, improve environmental assessment and reporting, and to develop the capacity of decision-making structures in Africa.
