Strong governance of marine and terrestrial systems results in a healthy and productive natural environment, which supports social and economic well being.

In 2019, work under this programme includes activities supporting environmental assessment, governance and management. GRID-Arendal supported the launch of the UN Environment Global Environment Outlook 6 (GEO 6) report at UNEA 4, and is contributing to associated GEO reports including Gender GEO and GEO for Cities. Through the GEF IW:LEARN project, GRID-Arendal facilitates the sharing of good practice in transboundary water management through supporting web and communication tools. There are several activities supporting improved management and governance in cooperation with the UN Environment Regional Seas programmes including supporting countries in West Africa in integrated ocean management (Mami Wata) and supporting the Tehran Convention and member countries. Coastal states continue to be supported in delineating their maritime boundaries under the UN Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) through ongoing activities in West Africa and the Pacific. Key partners in this thematic area include UN Environment, the Regional Seas Programmes, GEF, International Climate Initiative, and the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate.
