Temporary position, Technical Research Assistant GIS and web mapping
GRID-Arendal is seeking a technical research assistant to provide spatial analysis and web mapping development support. The position is a temporary position to support a range of projects including the EMODnet Bathymetry, Blue Bridge, and the Protected Area Solutions projects. The duration of the temporary position is 1.5 years, until the end of the duration of the projects.
 
Position description
GRID-Arendal is seeking a technical research assistant to provide spatial analysis and web mapping development support. The position is a temporary position to support a range of projects including the EMODnet Bathymetry, Blue Bridge, and the Protected Area Solutions projects. The duration of the temporary position is 1.5 years, until the end of the duration of the projects.
 
The ideal candidate has experience with spatial analysis using a range of commercial and open source products and can assist in the development of web mapping systems as well as other new and emerging technologies. The enthusiastic candidate will work with a small, but highly motivated international team to identify appropriate tools and technologies to enhance the use of spatial data in supporting sound environmental decision-making.
 
The temporary position is based at GRID-Arendal offices in Arendal, Norway.
 
The main activities of this position are to:
  • Support the development of innovative GIS, web mapping tools and training for improved protected area governance as part of the Protected Areas Solutions project
  • Assist in the development of the bathymetric model of the Norwegian Sea
  • Developing innovative web based communication products projects, including Story maps and web maps
  • Conduct research work and support to facilitate compilation of spatial data and information projects
  • Performing other related duties as required.
 
Required professional qualifications
  • BA or equivalent/higher in spatial science or similar field
  • Interest in environment information management and assessment
  • Good understanding of spatial analysis
  • Sound knowledge in the development of web mapping systems, knowledge of open layers/leaflet and R-scripting is an advantage
  • Excellent language proficiency in English, in particular excellent writing and editing skills
  • Norwegian or French as additional language skills would be an advantage
  • Excellent communication skills, especially in the use of visual communication;
  • Experience in working with the United Nations system, especially UNEP is an advantage

Compensation
GRID-Arendal’s salary system is linked to the Norwegian Government salary system. It is based on education and experience. Salaries are subject to Norwegian tax regulations. Insurance and personal benefits are provided in addition to salary.
